Roof falling in, 2 layers of siding, broken windows, dysfunctional side door, soffit and trim falling down. Suffice to say, this garage needed some help

The first step was the roof. I knew the whole thing needed to be re-sheeted, but wasn’t sure of the extent of damage to the rafters. I chose to rebuild what was there, and scab on to the existing rafters. In hindsight, I wish I would have decided to purchase brand new rafters. What I did was more time consuming, but cheaper. Both options are acceptable.

For some inexplicable reason, there was only a 4″ overhang in the back, and a 2′ overhang in the front, that was dangerously close to falling off. I chose to remove both of these, and add an even 12″ overhang to both sides. After sheeting was done, we laid down our sticky ice guard, and synthetic felt, and got to work on shingling.

I always install Owens Corning Trudefinition Duration Shingles. They come with a limited lifetime warranty and a 130 mph wind rating. This color was Onyx Black, which is very popular.

When the roof was complete, we moved on to soffit and trim. I always use aluminum soffit and fascia, and prefer to install the white color, because it always makes the trim pop! To install the trim properly, siding has to be removed.

After the trim was installed, we moved on to siding. After tearing off the old, it is very important to lay a good underlayment down. This helps any water penetrating the siding, to slide right down to the ground and not hurt the sheeting underneath.

I always install Timbercrest Premium Vinyl Siding. It is 15% thicker than typical siding, which hides imperfections in framing and sheeting much better. The color chosen was Sage green, which I am a big fan of. White corner posts were also chosen. Like the white trim, I really think this makes everything pop, and gives a very traditional and striking style.

Both windows were replaced with single hung pole barn windows, and the door was also done as well.

This garage was almost too far gone, but I got there just in time to salvage what was left.
